Arizona to Test Fish for PFAS in 25+ Lakes

Arizona officials are set to conduct tests on fish from over 25 lakes this summer to check for the presence of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly referred to as ‘forever chemicals.’ These substances have raised health concerns due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks associated with human consumption.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) will oversee the sampling process, which aims to evaluate the levels of PFAS in fish populations. Following the testing, advisories will be issued to inform the public about any health risks related to consuming fish from these bodies of water.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure public safety and address environmental contamination issues. The results of these tests will help guide recommendations for fish consumption, particularly for sensitive populations such as children and pregnant women.
