New York Takes Legal Action Against PFAS Manufacturers

New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against major chemical manufacturers including 3M and DuPont, alleging the companies have contributed to environmental contamination and public health risks through their production of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These chemicals, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment, have been found in various consumer products such as cookware, food packaging, and textiles.

The lawsuit claims that these companies knowingly manufactured and sold products containing PFAS, which have been linked to serious health issues, including cancer, liver damage, and developmental problems in children. The state is seeking to hold these manufacturers accountable for the cleanup of contaminated sites and for the health impacts on New Yorkers.

James emphasized the need for accountability, stating that the contamination has disproportionately affected low-income communities and communities of color. The lawsuit aims to address not only the environmental damage but also the public health crisis stemming from PFAS exposure.
