Quincy Fire Department Introduces PFAS-Free Gear

The Quincy Fire Department has begun implementing new, PFAS-free equipment after discovering concerning levels of the hazardous chemical in their existing gear. PFAS, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals,’ are substances that do not break down in the environment and can pose serious health risks. The decision to switch to PFAS-free equipment comes in light of new legislation set to take effect in Massachusetts in January 2027, which will prohibit the manufacture, sale, and distribution of fire equipment containing these harmful chemicals. This proactive measure by the Quincy Fire Department aims to enhance the safety of their personnel and the community they serve.
